August 12th, 2011

What’s a girl to do when her brother and sisters refuse to play? Why she invites her best friend over for some tea and dress-up girly time, of course!

Tutus. Frilly dresses. Tiaras. Tea.

And drama.

What’s a tea party without a little bit of drama…

Photographing the Ordinary Moments in Your Child’s Life

There’s nothing I love more than photographing the ordinary moments in my children’s lives; the unscripted everyday moments that collectively make up our extraordinary life together. These shots are often the most-treasured, yet easily captured. Here are a few simple tips to help you get started:

Stand back and make yourself invisible. There’s nothing I love more than candid shots of my children – unrehearsed, unstaged and unexpected moments captured when they were just too busy living in the moment to notice.

Some of the things we treasure most about our childhood were often forgotten about in photographs; the Raggedy Ann doll we clung to as we drifted off to dreamland or that smelly, tattered lovey we dragged around for three years straight. Preserve those treasured childhood memories by photographing your little ones with their favorite toys, games or books.

Don’t forget the little details. Honor your children’s individuality by capturing the little things that make them unique. Your child’s quirky sense of style, super neat penmanship. Or the way your little girl sticks her tongue out when she’s concentrating really hard. It’s all in the details…

Crazy Days of Summer Photography Challenge Week Ten: Summer Treats

Crazy Days of Summer Photo Challenge Week Ten: Summer Treats

We recently purchased twenty-five pounds of peaches from a nearby family farm. Twenty-five pounds of gorgeous, fragrant, fuzzy-skinned peaches. I smelled each peach as I carefully placed them into my refrigerator fruit drawer. Sniff. Put away. Sniff. Put away. Sniff. Put away. Ten sniffs later, reality set in. Somehow, our family would need to consume twenty-five pounds of peaches in one-week’s time. Twenty-five.pounds.of.fresh.from.the.farm.peaches. It’s a...

Crazy Days of Summer Photo Challenge Week Nine: Bubbles

Bubbles make me smile. So do bubble-covered babies. But photographing bubbles? Not so much. This week’s challenge was a bit of a…well…challenge. A bubble’s transparency, thin film and short shelf life make them difficult subjects to photograph, but with a few tips you’ll be well on your way to capturing great images. Bubble Photography Tips While shots of bubble-blowing children are great, consider shooting bubbles in...

Crazy Days of Summer Photo Challenge Week Eight: Motion

Crazy Days of Summer Photo Challenge Week Eight: Motion

My children are constantly in motion. Running Splashing Jumping Growing I’m on a mission to record the memories we make, to forever freeze life’s fleeting moments; photographing everything from special occasions to the ordinary little details that fill our every day. Like twirling in the grass on a warm summer afternoon. Capturing those moments can be quite tricky when you’re photographing moving subjects like my...

Crazy Days of Summer Week Five: Light

Small town living sure is sweet, especially if you’re lucky enough to live in the Mark Twain National Forest. Here, warm summer days are spent outdoors; playing, picking wildflowers and laying in the shade of one of our many trees.   During the summer months the forest is aglow. Light filters in through the trees, tiny patches of golden sunlight peeking through and out in...
