Dear Diastasis Symphysis Pubis: My Life Is So Much Better Without You

Dear Diastasis Symphysis Pubis:

You were such a party pooper during my last pregnancy and a major pain in the butt my hips, pelvis and abdomen. During my fifth month of pregnancy you crept into my body and took over, weakening the ligaments that held my pelvic joint together and causing said pelvic joint to gape open. You made it difficult to walk, sit, stand and turn over in bed. Heck, you caused me all kinds of grief and forced me to rely on a walker for assistance in getting around. Eventually you caused me so much pain that I found myself in a wheelchair and on painkillers…during what was supposed to be a wonderful pregnancy.

Thankfully you left my body three weeks after the birth of my daughter. Since you’ve been gone, my life has improved and I’m so much better off without you. Why? Because…

  1. I can walk, run, skip and jump! Okay so I don’t necessarily do all those things, but it’s not because I can’t. It’s because I’m lazy.
  2. I don’t have to ride the scooter at Wal-Mart anymore. I can shop like a normal person and get in and out of there in 10 minutes flat. No more geriatric scooters moving at a snail’s pace for me.
  3. I’m invisible. That’s right, no more creepy stares from rude people wondering what the heck a pregnant woman could’ve done to resort in her having to use a walker.
  4. No more lying in bed all day. Lounging in bed all day is totally overrated when you’re forced to do it and have a family that you’d rather be spending time with. I’m so glad that I’m no longer holed up in my room with my feet up in bed.
  5. I don’t moan in public anymore. Getting in and out of the car is no longer a painful experience. Until you came along, I never thought about the muscles or strength it took to do the simplest of things like getting in and out of a car. I have a newfound appreciation for my body and all that it can do. And thankfully, I don’t scream or moan in pain while climbing into or sliding out of the car anymore.
  6. No more mismatched accessories. Let’s face it, my walker never matched my outfit. It was the one accessory that never jived with the rest of my ensemble. Blue doesn’t go with everything, you know.
  7. I can cook again! For six months, my husband was forced to cook, clean and care for everyone in our home, including me. The poor guy worked all day, came home and cooked dinner every single night. Do you know how hard that is for a newly-married guy who really doesn’t know how to cook, but instead heats stuff up? I’m happy to say that fish sticks and macaroni and cheese are no longer regular staples in our household. We rarely eat convenience foods these days.
  8. I can do the funky chicken. I won’t, but I could if I wanted to.
  9. I can finally shave my own legs! I’m not going to lie. I rarely shave my legs these days, but it’s not because I can’t. It’s cold, I’m lazy and it’s just not a priority for me – so too bad.
  10. I can have sex like a normal person again. I’m not expanding on that one. We’ll just leave it at that.

So, goodbye Diastasis Pubis! I’m over you. Go bug someone else.

All good reasons! And my goodness…WHY are those scooters SO SLOW?!?! I’ve had to use one before and it just makes shopping dreadful. Glad you don’t need one anymore!

Thanks for coming to my blog. I’m glad I came to yours.
I googled DSP when I read it in your comment. I’m so happy for you to be rid of it.
At my age and condition, I have some aches and pains, but absolutely nothing to compare.
Good for you.

Back again.
Thanks for your comment on my blog.
I like the way you say that your husband and kids are vocal about what you can post.
Do they all check it before it goes up?

Hey! I’m here from SITS, and so glad I found you! I’m a momma of four who experienced symphysis pubis dysfunction with three of my pregnancies. Everyone thought I was crazy; I’m sure you know what I mean. Heck, *I* thought I was crazy when I first felt it with my second pregnancy. I honestly thought the baby was going to fall out. Soooooo glad to be done with pregnancies! Woo!

Congrats on getting rid of pain! And happy SITS Saturday Sharefest!

@Alicia,
Wow! It’s great to know that I’m not alone. You’re the first person I’ve “met” who experienced Diastasis Symphysis Pubis also. I’m so sorry that you experienced this with three of your pregnancies. My particular pain was so severe that it’s the reason why we’ve decided to stop having children. Thanks so much for your comment!

I’ve never heard of Diastasis Pubis, but thank goodness it’s gone! So happy I didn’t experience any of that when I was PG!

Happy SITS Sunday!

Oh, my goodness. You are the first person I’ve known who also had this! Except I ruptured all my pelvic ligaments giving birth to my last child. None of the doctors knew why (it usually happens with first baby).
I actually blogged about a couple days ago when using Mama Kat’s prompt on “A Difficult Conversation.”
It was by the grace of God that my oldest child needed to see an orthopedist a month after my baby was born, and when I said I couldn’t drive because I was on bedrest, the doc asked why I was on bedrest with a newborn. He told me “sounds like postpartum pubic diastasis.” When I asked him how he knew, he said, “I did my college thesis on it. I wish I had been there when you gave birth. I would’ve taken you right into the OR and pushed your hips back together while your body still had natural anaesthesia in it. You wouldn’t be using a walker.” He told me to get crutches right away as it’s a more natural position for the body. What a blessing to have met him–and now to have “met” someone who knows how I felt! (And my husband and kids and church served me for five weeks straight while I lay in bed , first on one side, then the other every 2 hours round the clock.” God healed me miraculously 6 months later when I asked —begged–for prayer. The pain left immediately and for the first time since my pregancy, I could sit, stand, walk, bend, without pain!!!!

@Zoanna,
Wow! Our similiarities are amazing! I gave birth to my daughter via c-section for reasons not related to the diastasis pubis, but my doctor did push my hips together after stitching me up. Recovering from a c-section along with the diastasis pubis pain was terrible! Like you, I had an amazing church family that stepped in and helped out. My entire family lives in Hawaii so having family there throughout was not an option. I’m so glad that we’re both doing much better. Thanks so much for stopping by. Heading on over to your blog now!

I never knew there was a name for what I went through! I didn’t have it so bad that I had to use a walker or cart but I did have leg weakness by my third go ’round. I could barely walk after I gave birth.
I’m glad to hear you’re back to shaving and getting down!
