Thrift Store Find: Minty Green Dream or Nightmare?

Thrift Store Find: Minty Green Dream or Nightmare?

Once upon a time, I used to love hunting for old furniture in thrift shops. I got so much pleasure out of giving neglected, tossed aside chairs, tables and ottomans a facelift. Sanding, reupholstering and scraping old paint; turning an old ugly piece into something beautiful and new.

I visited a local thrift store last week and walked away with a couple of great finds, including a comfy old chair that only set me back $30.

thrift store find,

I’m in the market for a new-to-me desk and chair and a super comfy seat to throw in the corner of my new little office space. I’m going with an ivory palette that could use a pastel pop of color and I think the minty green chair I found might work perfectly.

thrift store find,

I’m planning on adding an accent pillow, but I have no plans to reupholster the chair. As a matter of fact, I kind of like it as is.

Unfortunately, my husband and older children don’t agree. Translation: They think the “ugly chair” should be reupholstered. Like, yesterday.

So now I’m turning to you, dear blog readers. I’d love to know what you think.

Is my thrift store find a minty green dream or a nightmare?

The upholstery doesn’t really bother me, but something about it is “grandma-ish”. (sorry) I guess in the right room with an accent pillow like you plan, it might fly though.

Haha! I think you’re the first person to be kind of against it or even a little iffy about the chair. That actually makes me smile. :) I can definitely see this thing in some old lady’s house. lol

Seriously love it. It’ll look great with a pearl/off-white blanket throw or an accent pillow :)

I don’t see minty green, I see a very light turquoise which is really in right now…can mix with green, or whatever floats your boat…lots of choices…go for it!

Thanks! I really excited to find it. :)

I love seaform colored things and it looks in good shape. Just had a print throw and a coordinated throw and they’ll forget all about what’s really underneath.

Seafoam! That’s probably a better description of the color! :)

I love it! It looks so cozy, I want to curl up on it. An orange pillow would look awesome on it.

Same here! I’m definitely going for a distressed look with my desk. I’m still in the process of hunting one down. :)

I’d go with a good cleaning and just add an accent pillow, as you said. Love the color!

Haha! You’ll probably freak out when I tell you that we’ve been living in a hotel for about 10 weeks now. The potential for bedbugs is a lot higher in a hotel, I think. Either way, the chair and hotel are free of bed bugs. I’m just hoping that our mattresses are still bug-free after the movers deliver them to our new house next week! :)

Thanks! You can’t have it, but you can come over and plop your bottom on it while I make you a cup of coffee. :)

DagmarTwitter: DagmarBleasdale (194 comments)

I’d upholster it — in the same fabric :) It’s a great find. I just don’t like the idea of all the dirt in the fabric, who knows what lives in there after other people have had it for years. But I love the color of the chair!

You’re cracking me up! After having lived in a hotel that hundreds of people have been through since we moved here 10 weeks ago, I’m unfazed by the thought of the previous owners of the chair. lol It’ll definitely get a good cleaning. :)

DagmarTwitter: DagmarBleasdale (194 comments)

Oh, that is so true! It is scary to think what lives in hotels but we all survive, right? Yes, then maybe just a good cleaning :)

I love it too! :) I’ve been thinking about you all day, Andi! How are you? Let’s catch up sometime soon. :)

Ohhhhh- I love it!!! We used to have one like that which was a burnt rusty orange. I didn’t care about the color- it was comfy & it was my favorite seat in the house. That is until my cat decided to mark it as his & the poor chair had to leave. I was so sad.

I can’t wait to see where you put it when you get settled.

Looks comfy!! And it totally matches the color of my sofa!

Really? Is your sofa for sale? Kidding. :P

I have to say that I find the chair to be totally relaxing and since it’s going in your office I think it should be what you want it to be. I have a chair similar to it that I might have to post about and it technically could be considered an “ugly chair” by most….mine came from my mom & I have absolutely no intention of re-upholstering it. Personally…I love the chair…both yours & mine! So I’m saying Minty Green Dream ;-)
