A Breast Lump Update {My Breast Lump Journey}

If you haven’t already heard, I recently discovered a lump in my breast.

If you have heard, and you’re one of the many people who’ve been sweet enough to pray for me and offer kind words of encouragement here on my blog, on Facebook and Twitter or even privately, thank you. I can’t even begin to tell you just how much I appreciate your kindness.

As promised, here’s a quick update:

I met with my doctor this morning and she confirmed that there is, indeed, something there. She’s just not quite sure whether it’s old scar tissue from the lump I had removed 18 years ago or a new lump. So, she’s sending me over to the hospital tomorrow for a mammogram.

This will be my first mammogram and I’m actually looking forward to the experience.

Of course I have every intention of sharing my first mammogram experience with you!

Why would I choose to publicly share what some would view as a private and personal health issue? Because I have a voice and I’m determined to use it.

As women, we need to be more proactive about our health. Performing monthly breast self-exams is a simple step toward being more proactive when it comes to our health.

Whether or not this breast lump is a false alarm, I feel strongly about sharing the experience publicly. I sure hope you don’t mind.

I will continue to pray for you! Mammograms aren’t really that big a deal. I’ve had several (had my first early since there is a history of breast cancer in my family) and while I wouldn’t want to have one more than once a year, they really aren’t that bad. :)

I admire you for making this issue public on your blog. We, as women, do need to empower each other by speaking publicly about things like this. Kudos to you!

Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you. I think it is great that you are sharing your story with us. It is so easy, at least for me, to put myself last on the list. Your story is a great reminder that we need to put ourselves first. Again, my thoughts and prayers are with you!

For years I have heard these horror stories about how bad and awful mammograms are…and then one of my friend’s had to get one earlier this year. She blogged about it, and totally changed my perception of the entire experience. Sharing your story is a huge thing.

Praying for you!

I come from a very long line of women that get breast cancer – my mom most recently.. She had a double mastectomy earlier this year – I have been having mammograms for over 10 years now and because I am a very high candidate for breast cancer – I also have a MRI every year AND an ultrasound mammogram… It’s crazy – but because I am a mom of 2 girls and being healthy is very important – I think it’s so very important for everyone to get checked out. Here’s to a clean bill –

Proactive is right. I had a mass two summers ago and the 5 month ordeal was horrible… but, at least I did something. Good for you for not ignoring it…

I’ve heard that most of the time, it turns out to be nothing, and I REALLY hope that’s the case for you. But I’m so glad you are following up on this. It’s a personal issue to me; I was diagnosed with breast cancer a year and a half ago (my daughter was still an infant). Young women can and do get breast cancer. Be hopeful, but don’t let doctors blow you off or suggest you’re too young (I have friends with breast cancer where that happened, their doctors said they were too young). And keep spreading the word like this to encourage other women to stay on top of their health as well.

Best Wishes!!

Your story really hammers home the reality that this sort of thing can happen to any woman, at any time. You’re absolutely right in advocating regular self-exams, it’s the best way to catch something early, while its still manageable. You are an inspiration, thank you for sharing your story
