Crazy Days of Summer Photo Challenge Week Twelve: Blue Skies

Blue skies are usually abundant during the summer months here in small town Missouri, but more and more lately our blue skies have looked…well…gray. It seems that Mother Nature just can’t make up her mind.

Overcast one day. Stormy the next.

And then stormy again. And again. And again.

Mother Nature has been extremely fickle around these parts as of late. Of course it was just my luck that I was sick as a dog when she finally decided to cooperate.

Too sick to really make an effort to capture anything exciting.

See what I mean?

Of course there’s this photo of my daughter, Alana, grinning from ear to ear as my husband tossed her in the air. Over and over again.

crazy days of summer photo challenge, photography meme, live and love out loud meme, project alicia meme,

If only I had double checked my settings and used my prime lens instead of my dusty, should-have-been-cleaned kit lens. Oh well. Live and learn.

And hope for blue skies in the near future here in small town Missouri.

Speaking of small town Missouri… How about a tour courtesy of some old photos I dug out of my archives? You’ll be thrilled to see that they’re filled with blue skies. However, I must warn you that these photos were captured when I was too much of a chicken to turn the dial on my Nikon from auto to manual. Those days have since passed, but I digress.

Without further ado, welcome to small town Missouri…

Where back country roads twist and turn their way along farm lands and cow pastures.

Rivers, lakes, streams and creeks are teeming with wildlife.

crazy days of summer photo challenge, photography meme, live and love out loud meme, project alicia meme,

Fields of wildflowers rejoice in the warm sun.

Abandoned barns are more than just dilapidated reminders of the past.

crazy days of summer photo challenge, photography meme, live and love out loud meme, project alicia meme,

And old abandoned Civil War homes are steeped in history and have the power to give me goosebumps every.single.time.

crazy days of summer photo challenge, photography meme, live and love out loud meme, project alicia meme,

Speaking of goosebumps, I had a serious case of it while shooting the Bates-Geers Home on Slabtown Road in which is featured above. When I uploaded my photos later on that afternoon, I noticed a figure in the bottom left portion of the home, just below the eaves. I’d love to know what you think. Is it a weird play of shadows and light or possibly a figure of a resident from the past? Feel free to right-click on the image and open it in a new tab to take a closer look. I’m dying to know what you think.

…………………….

As always, thank you so much for joining Alicia (Project Alicia) and me in the Crazy Days of Summer Photo Challenge.

Thanks, Cedar! It didn’t come out as I had wanted, but I was way too sick to try any harder. Maybe I’ll try those shots again in the near future. I’ve already had a sneak peek at your pics and oh.my.goodness. I’ll be heading over to take a good look soon and I can’t wait! :)

Great shots but I love your blue skies. Such a great contrast with green, yellow and blue.

LOVE the shots, esp. the abandoned house ( I love abandoned structures). Although I don’t see the figure you speak of, but then again I don’t believe in ghosts.

Thanks! It’s a cool house that has a lot of history dating back to the Civil War. It the first home built in the area and served as a rest stop for Civil War soldiers.

Aw, thanks! I was tempted to take the camera out on my balcony at about 3am this morning during another storm, but we had 50 mph winds and the rain was blowing everywhere. Maybe next time…

The photo of your daughter is adorable!

Thank you so much, Sarah. I had a blast getting lightning shots, though it was a little time-consuming. I squealed every time lightning struck. Also, it’s stinkin’ hard trying to time your shutter release with lightning strikes. lol

Jessaca (4 comments)

Wow incredible photo of the lightning!! Great set of photos!! Beautiful wildflower field photo!!
Enjoy your day!!

Kristi (3460 comments) twitter: @TweetingMama

Thank you so much, Jessaca. Have a great weekend. :)

Great shots! And, yes, that last one ~ that’s definitely a person in the shadows. Creepy.

Right?!? Creepy, indeed. I felt creeped out the entire time and I wasn’t even on the property.

Kristi (3460 comments) twitter: @TweetingMama

Thanks! I was pleased with the lightning photos I managed to capture, but I’d love to take some from atop a cliff someday. I feel like I could do better. Maybe we need to run away and take lightning photos one night! :) Thanks for stopping by, Gina. Have a great weekend.

Leovi (17 comments)

Beautiful pictures, I love them all, but especially the first with lightning and the road at night. Greetings.

Kristi (3460 comments) twitter: @TweetingMama

Thank you so much, Leovi. Have a great weekend. :)

Sarah @ OneStarryNight (73 comments) twitter: @onestarrynight

LOVE the first photo. It can be so hard to capture lightning sometimes and you did it wonderfully!
Sarah @ OneStarryNight´s last blog post – The Moon

Kristi (3460 comments) twitter: @TweetingMama

Thanks, Sarah. I literally stood on my balcony for 30 minutes hitting the shutter button repeatedly and hoping that lightning would strike during exposure.

Feyella @ Parenting .. smh (13 comments) twitter: @smhmama

I love these shots, especially the one with on the road, great affects. Funny we’ve had the same type of weather issues here in Maryland. We’ve had a stormy couple of days for us here.

Cindy (1 comments) twitter: @bkatedesigns

I love your photos! Your daughter is adorable! I would love to think the “person” is a ghost, so I put the photo in photoshop, but when you play with some settings I think it is the curtain draped in the light? It seriously looks like someone though! That would give me some goosebumps also!

Kristi (3460 comments) twitter: @TweetingMama

I was wondering who’d be the first to upload the pic into Photoshop to take a closer look. :) So glad you did. You’re absolutely right by the way. The screens were blown out throughout the entire home and the shadows and light that day really made it seem like there was someone standing out there. Though it’s really not a figure, I’ve gotta tell you…I felt like someone or something was watching me the entire time. I got really close to the fence, but didn’t trespass and I felt uncomfortable the whole time. It was really strange. I don’t normally get creeped out like that, especially during the day. I’m rambling… Thanks so much for stopping by, Cindy. I hopped on over to your Etsy shop and loved what I saw. So much cuteness going on. Headbands. Skirts. Dresses. Rompers. I.die. ;)

EdT. (11 comments) twitter: @etee

Kristi – I LOVE that first shot! In my own post I have a storm shot (and the explanation for same), in which I missed including a lightning bolt by like 1/4 second. (Yeah, the sky may not be technically “blue”, but to be honest blue can get a bit boring when it is all you see for like 100+ days.)

I loved your storm shots! And those lightning shots are difficult to capture, even when you’re using a 7 second exposure time. Thanks so much for stopping by. Have a great day! :)

Wow! It really does look like someone’s there! I love taking photos of abandoned buildings. But sometimes you just can’t help but get that creepy feeling! Beautiful photos!! Thanks for hosting!
Dawn´s last blog post – Blue Skies

Kristi (3460 comments) twitter: @TweetingMama

I love taking photos of abandoned buildings too. Abandoned barns don’t freak me out, but sometimes these abandoned homes creep me out! I didn’t mention it in my post, but that home was around in the Civil War era and actually served as a coach stop for soldiers. Thanks for stopping by and joining us in the Crazy Days of Summer Photo Challenge, Dawn. :)

Kristi (3460 comments) twitter: @TweetingMama

Thanks! Blue skies are always a sign of a great day. :)

Susan (13 comments)

Oh, very eerie ghost! At least they didn’t seem to mind your taking their picture. Love the storm shots as well.

As far as my sunflower shot, I edited it in Picnik and used one of their Space Textures. All of my sun flares in this week’s photos were the real deal.
